Bridging The Gap

Last week, members of sfBIG joined others at City College of San Francisco to help educate our public school's educators on the interactive world and new technologies their students will be introduced to in the coming years. By"Bridging the Gap" between our educators and the ever-changing digital world, we are making a direct impact on the lives and futures or our youth. Breaking up into two classrooms, companies like Facebook, LinkedIn, Bing, Google, Six Apart, and Digg, presented not only their technology, but how teachers can use the technology to better leverage a digital curriculum and help students be in the best position possible as they head into the next phase of adulthood and the working world.

To hear it from a few who presented really tells the story. Hannah Green from LinkedIn was affected positively by the experience saying "What a treat to be in front of the classroom as opposed to being a student in the crowd. It was great to meet the teachers who are working to give their students a competitive advantage. Being in this industry, living in this area, it is easy to take for granted how advanced all of our platforms are. This program takes a step back and shows how digital can help young people in and out of the classroom." With previous teaching experience, Veronica Tegen from Digg said, "I've taught at both a university and after-school programs. This was the first time I've educated the educators, and I loved it! The conversations and direction they take you in are so interesting because as they absorb it all in, you realize they are going to virally pass the information along."

The results were inspiring. The teachers were not only engaged, but aggressively searching out ways to better understand what was being presented to them. The teacher's questions ranged from the basic to the complex, showing us that we still have much progress to achieve. As our interactive community continues to develop at warp speeds, we need to make sure our educators and our youth are supported by digital natives like us.

San Francisco Bay Area Interactive Group

I've been in the marketing/business for over 10 years in San Francisco and SFBIG has been instrumental in contributing to the ad community. It's a great resource for both agencies, clients and sellers and a way to stay in connection with our ad world in SF. SFBIG has given me the opportunity to stay apprised on the business front for new companies and technologies while also having a great social element for an overall rewarding experience.
